kreesha turner passion

This song is going to blow up on American radio quite soon. It's called "Passion" and the artist is Kreesha Turner.

It's the title track off her new album "Passion" which will be released in January 2009.

I heard her perform it live in between the Dash Smooch and Ultimo lingerie fashion shows at Style 360's Fashion Week events on Tuesday morning. She rocked the runway with this one. (P.S. Mel B hosted the Ultimo show, and for the love of Pete, she's hot!)

You may have already heard of her as her song "Bounce With Me" has been played in the background on "The Hills," "Gossip Girl," "Entourage" and other shows. Give this song a listen below (the "video" is just a photo, so you'll have to listen to the actual song.) It's going to blow up in the clubs and on radio, and when someone drops the remix, that's going to be just as hot.

Introducing Kreesha Turner To NeuFutur

Emerging artist Kreesha Turner has already had her song “Bounce With Me” featured on TV shows like Lipstick Jungle and Entourage as well as the new Nikon commercial featuring Ashton Kutcher. Her debut album is slated to be released in October ’08 from Capitol Music Group; in the meantime I wanted to introduce you to her and her music early so see below for a stream to “Bounce with Me” and her first radio single “Don’t Call Me Baby.” She’s also started “The Passion Movement” and is asking What’s Your PASSION? on her YouTube page at www.youtube.com/kreeshaturner so that people can upload their “PASSION” video to her page – check it out!

A lot will be said and written about Kreesha Turner’s exciting debut album Passion and its eclectic blend of soulful, jazzy, pop-infused R&B. But for the young artist whose sweet soprano shines on every track, the album can be described quite simply. “It’s just good music to enjoy and listen to over and over again,” says Kreesha.

All she asks is that you soak up all 13 tracks before passing judgment. “Take it in as one piece. You’re only going to understand me as an artist if you hear all the songs.” That’s because the decidedly pop feel of “Bounce With Me” can’t be compared to the funky European vibe of “Don’t Call Me Baby” (“A song to a guy,” says Kreesha), the beat-heavy “My Place” (“It’s a very sad song”) or the stripped-down sound of “If You See Him” (“A nice little closer that lets people hear my voice”).

Kreesha co-wrote five of the songs, including the title track, which she believes is only fitting. “It’s a song about dedication and perseverance.”

The oldest of three children born to a Canadian father and Jamaican mother, Kreesha was raised in Edmonton, a city of about 1 million in the of Alberta. She can’t remember a time when music wasn’t part of her life. As young as six, Kreesha would dance in her bedroom to instrumentals by jazz icon Oscar Peterson. “I always had an inclination for jazz,” she recalls. “As long as I can remember.”

Over the years, Kreesha’s musical tastes broadened and she fell in love with R&B acts like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott and D’Angelo, Hip-Hop acts including A Tribe Called Quest, Andre 3000 and Common and Rock acts like the Foo Fighters and Our Lady Peace. Kreesha expressed her love of music through dance and performed modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop and African. But it wasn’t until 2000 that Kreesha took a voyage that would lead her to discover that she was blessed with another way of expressing herself.

“My mom wanted me to experience how she grew up and to learn about our Jamaican culture,” Kreesha explains, “So she sent me to live in Jamaica for a year when I was 15.” Kreesha quickly learned that singing is a big part of everyday life on the island, particularly at the Pentecostal church. Friends convinced her to try out for the youth choir. “I remember thinking, ‘I can’t do this, I can’t sing!’ especially because it was a solo audition.” On the strength of her rendition of Canada’s national anthem, she was accepted into the choir and began singing gospel songs at the Faith Temple Tabernacle for parishioners who couldn’t help but take notice of her voice. It changed her life forever. “I always knew the power of music but I only knew how to express it through movement. But when I started singing in my church choir, for the first time I was the one creating music,” Kreesha recalls. “I was the one standing there singing and seeing the energy and emotion pouring out of the people. I fell in love with singing.”

Upon her return to Canada, Kreesha was hooked on performing and soon became known at her high school as “the girl who sings the national anthem” at commencement and athletic events. She formed a dance crew that entertained with song-and-dance routines.

With no R&B scene to speak of in Edmonton, Kreesha immersed herself in the city’s underground hip-hop community. Her determination to infuse some R&B into the scene was welcomed – and people embraced her smooth voice and stunning looks. “I found I was noticed at a lot of events simply because I was different. There would be 10 rap guys and me. I was the only female and the only alternative to rap,” she remembers. “I’d be the only singer.” Offers to do her own shows started pouring in and Kreesha performed almost every weekend for three years.

Despite stints working at a greenhouse and in retail, Kreesha knew music would become a living. “I had it in my head.” She made a deal with her family and she had their support. “As soon as I got out of high school I told my parents that I’m going to try as hard as I can for the next five years and if nothing happens I’ll go back to school and my back-up plan,” says Kreesha.

Instead, the young singer did everything she could think of to perfect her craft. She joined a gospel choir and a jazz choir, took lessons in acting, musical theatre, piano and guitar. She read books, recorded her own EPs and sold them at her shows. And she entered every singing competition she could.

In 2005, she won a talent search contest sponsored by Edmonton radio station 91.7 FM The Bounce and was given the chance to record four tracks with Vancouver-based writers/producers Hipjoint. One of those songs, “Bounce With Me,” became a radio hit and attracted the attention of urban music manager Chris Smith (Nelly Furtado, Tamia). The song she describes as “fun” has been featured in episodes of Gossip Girl and Entourage as well as in promos for Lipstick Jungle.

On Passion, Kreesha collaborated with some of the best in the business including Grammy Award-winning songwriter Harold Lilly (Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson), producer Devo Springsteen, another Grammy winner (John Legend, Aretha Franklin) and Toronto-based songwriter and producer Jon Levine (Philosopher Kings, Nelly Furtado).

Eclectic is a good word to describe Kreesha’s debut. “Always (Lovin’ You)” is a modern homage to Minnie Riperton’s soulful classic “Lovin’ You” and was produced by Devo Springsteen. “Chains of Love”, written in the studio by Kreesha and Jon Levine, was inspired by her decision to sport an afro on that day.

“I can honestly say that I love my whole album,” Kreesha says. “I’m so proud of every single song on there.”

And like any true artist, Kreesha hopes her music touches people. “I want them to know which song they can turn on if they’re feeling a certain way,” she says. “Regardless of what emotion it is, for me to be able to create that emotion is a privilege and an intimate type of interaction.”

Is Kreesha Turner The Next R&B/Pop Diva?

By Njai Joszor

Come this fall, all eyes will be set to the release of Capitol/EMI Canada recording artist Kreesha Turner’s debut album “Passion.”

Kicking off with the single “Bounce With Me,” Turner, born and raised in Edmonton, Ontario, Canada has been gaining momentum on the charts and on television where her music has been featured on hit shows including “Gossip Girl,” “Entourage,” and “The Hills.”

A priority for both of her labels, the singer has been positioned as the next big pop and R&B star in the wake of international sensations Rihanna and Leona Lewis, both of which have performed well on both sides of ‘the pond’ at a time when the music industry is cutting back on budgets and rosters.

Kreesha Turner Exclusive Interview
Written by: Steven H., Senior Editor – Posted on: Thu Jun 19th, 2008

You know those Nikon commercials when Ashton Kutcher is making a phone call and some girl comes over, takes a couple snapshots with it and returns it to his bag as if nothing had happened? You probably do, considering it's one of the most inescapable advertising campaigns to ever hit the small screen. That also means that by now, you most likely sing along to the charming scats being sung in the background as the commercial plays. Admit it, you know you do it like the rest of us.

Long after Ashton discovers that he's been stolen from and inexplicably doesn't care that he's a theft target, that bouncing song dances in your mind, putting a spring in your step - or, more appropriately, a tap in your foot as you lounge on your sofa. The catchy song is called "Bounce With Me," and is the debut single from the Canadian songstress Kreesha Turner. The light and upbeat number has made its rounds on the TV circuit, appearing on shows like Entourage, The Hills and So You Think You Can Dance, but the Edmonton native has a whole lot more up her sleeve, having just taped a video for her next single "Don't Call Me Baby" as the release date for her debut Passion draws near.

It all started for Kreesha with a radio competition, which got the attention of Nelly Furtado's manager and lead to her signing deal with Capitol Records. After "Bounce With Me" made a splash on the small screen, Kreesha headed to the studio to record tracks for her upcoming album Passion, due out in stores on October 14. The album parallels what Kreesha likes to call The Passion Movement, a promotional push to get fans to upload videos of themselves discussing or showcasing their individual passion, allowing her listeners to feel more involved with the album's evolution.

The release date for Passion may be months away, but Kreesha is keeping busy building up her name and parlaying the success of "Bounce With Me" into her solo career. Kreesha caught up with Kiwibox to chat about how Candi Staton is an artist you should know, what it was like to live in Jamaica as a kid and just how crazy it can be to hear your song pop up on TV when you least expect it.

Kreesha Turner the next Rihanna?

Kreesha Turner

Most people realize it takes a small army of stylists and production personnel to create the sexy, glamorous look of those slick hip-hop and R&B videos in high rotation on the music stations. For most of us, just finding a clean shirt to wear in the morning is tough enough. But when you're a rising star on the music scene who's poised to be the next urban diva, well, you'd better work it. So it's no surprise that everything about Kreesha Turner is perfect when she arrives for a lunch interview, from her impeccably ringleted hair to her subtle yet defined makeup.

Chances are you've already heard her hit single, "Bounce With Me". The infectious, summer-ready tune is the reason the 23-year-old singer, who was born and raised in Edmonton, is attracting significant interest. Aside from burning up the radio and TV charts, the song has popped up all over the small screen recently in popular shows like "Entourage", "Gossip Girl" and "The Hills".

The song is also what got Turner a record deal in the first place. Two years ago, she won a talent contest hosted by Edmonton radio station Bounce 91.7. The prize was time in a studio, where she recorded "Bounce With Me". She and her mother hired promoters to push the track to radio, and the gambit worked: the tune caught the ear of influential Toronto manager Chris Smith, who has worked with such artists as Nelly Furtado and Tamia. Soon, Turner was signed to EMI Music in Canada and Virgin in the United States.

Is Kreesha Turner's 'Don't Call Me Baby' a 'Song of Summer' contender?

Jun 23, 2008, 11:36 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music, Snap Judgment

With Amy Winehouse's Back to Black still residing among Billboard's Top 100 albums after 66 weeks on the charts, and Duffy's "Mercy" turning into a solid radio staple, who knows if America is ready to embrace yet another retro-soul diva. But as far as I'm concerned, it'd be a shame if Kreesha Turner's gorgeously melancholy "Don't Call Me Baby" (embedded below with fan-made slide-show) doesn't get a chance to enter the Thunderdome and fight it out as an official candidate for Song of Summer 2008. That falsetto breakdown before the final chorus — where Turner asks "What you gonna say this time? What's your excuse?/ When you gonna break my heart? When you gonna break?/ Nobody hurts like you" — gives me chills (on repeat loop). In fact, not since "Irreplaceable" has a defiant goodbye to an errant lover hurt so bad.

What say you, PopWatchers? Are you ready to hop aboard the Kreesha Turner bandwagon, or should the lady take a number and get in line for my iPod's "Home for Tragic Divas" playlist?

Ashton Isn't Camera Shy

Posted Fri Jun 6, 2008 11:10am PDT by Suzanne Baran in As Heard On...

This one's for the ladies. Nikon has signed Ashton Kutcher to star in TV commercials to promote the new Nikon COOLPIX cameras.

The two new Nikon ads are set in boutique hotels and upscale shopping destinations. It's a feast for the eyes, with female models and the camera's exquisite styling, fashionable colors, simplicity, and performance. The two spots featuring Ashton are directed by Emmy Award-winner Brian Buckley. Watch, as adoring fans pass around Ashton's camera and take pictures on the sly:

A clever tune plays in the background of the Nikon ad. Fortunately, or unfortunately--depending upon how you feel about her music--emerging artist/musician Kreesha Turner gets some play. But viewers might be too caught up in the obvious eye candy to notice her hit tune, "Bounce With Me."

This same track has been featured on Entourage, Gossip Girl, and other TV shows. It was even heard in a Lipstick Jungle promo.

But fans and curious listeners alike will have to wait for her debut album, Passion. It's slated for an October '08 release from Capitol Music Group. Turner's got an old-school feel to her music, an eclectic blend of soulful, jazzy, pop-infused R&B.

So how did she get her start? Back in 2005, Turner won a talent search contest sponsored by an Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) radio station called The Bounce. She won the chance to record four tracks with Vancouver-based writers/producers Hipjoint. When her song "Bounce With Me" became a radio hit, she attracted the attention of Nelly Furtado's manager, Chris Smith.

On "Passion," Turner collaborated with some of the best in the business, including Grammy Award-winning songwriter Harold Lilly (who also writes songs for Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson), producer Devo Springsteen (also Grammy winner for his work with John Legend and Aretha Franklin), and Toronto-based songwriter and producer Jon Levine (Philosopher Kings, Nelly Furtado).

Check out the lyrics from "Bounce With Me":

Today it's 103
Your daddy ain't home and your mama's asleep
Lets go, it's a full moon night
Ain't comin back til the morning light
Gotta itch
Gotta scratch
Gotta bounce
Gotta dance

See the other version of Ashton's Nikon commercial, featuring "Bounce With Me":

Decide which Ashton you prefer--and enjoy the music.
